Reducing our carbon footprint
Olvi aims to mitigate climate change both in its own operations and in the value chain. The majority of climate emissions arise in the value chain. In accordance with the transition plan for climate change mitigation, material development and packaging redesign, product portfolio development, and reducing emissions from transportation are the most important tools for reducing value chain emissions. Emissions from our own production are reduced through the use of renewable electricity and renewable energy sources, as well as by improving energy efficiency.
Own Operations
The direct greenhouse gas emissions from our own operations mainly originate from the production of heat, steam and electricity used in our production facilities. Since 2015, we have reduced market-based energy emissions to less than half, primarily through renewable energy solutions in both electricity and heat energy and steam production. Olvi’s Finnish production facilities and the Danish production facility already use renewable energy sources, such as wood chips and bio-oil, for steam and heat production. In addition, the A. Le Coq and Cēsu Alus breweries generate biogas from wastewater, partially replacing fossil fuels. Renewable electricity is used in all of the Group’s established companies in Finland and the Baltic Sea region, and the Group’s new companies will transition to green electricity in stages.
Our goal is to use 100% renewable energy by 2030. More than half of our energy is already produced with renewable energy sources. Structural changes in the Group may temporarily change the situation, but the targets will also apply to new companies.
Value chain
Approximately 95% of the Olvi Group’s climate emissions originate from the value chain. Four-fifths of these emissions come from purchased materials and services. The next most significant sources are inbound and outbound transportation.
We can best reduce emissions from purchased materials through joint development efforts with our value chain partners. Material-related climate emissions are reduced by lightening packaging, increasing the use of recycled materials, reusing materials, reducing waste and developing the product portfolio. For example, the share of recycled material in plastic bottles is approximately 15%, and recycled material accounts for around one quarter of all packaging materials. Most transport packaging, such as pallets and trays, is reusable, which has a significant impact on reducing material use.
Transport emissions are reduced through daily efforts such as route planning and increasing the use of renewable fuels. In addition to renewable fuels, we already use a few electric and biogas-powered trucks.

We operate with high standards
In addition to improving our operations, we are also developing our emissions reporting so that we can better identify the impacts arising from different stages of production and other operations. We report more detailed information on environmental impacts in the sustainability statement. In CDP reporting, we achieved an excellent score of A- in 2025. We also participate in the EcoVadis sustainability assessment, where our sustainability work received a Gold rating, placing us among the top 5% of responding companies. In addition, in 2024 and 2025, Olvi was recognised by Time magazine by being included in the global list of 500 sustainably growing companies.
To ensure the effectiveness of our emission reduction work, we have approved science-based climate targets (SBT). We regularly update the transition plan that forms the basis of this work and report on the progress and measures of our emission reduction work in the sustainability statement.
